Regional Airport in Seam Reap, Ankor Wat, Cambodia

A simple elegant design for the complex problem of an airport terminal.

An impressive design that owes much to the two relatively simple and clear design and structural elements of the arches and the membrane surfaces. Given the terrain, the diagonal way these elements are lined up is not a matter of chance but the result of natural seasonal variations in wind direction and positions of the sun. Without calling for any particular technological effort, this leads to ideal shade conditions and to the natural ventilation or air-conditioning of the roofed-in space which remains open all around and along the archways. Even so, the membrane roof offers the necessary protection from sun and rain (monsoons).

The presentation is simple and the drawings and the model limit themselves to essentials.

This makes it clear, without any frills, what the design is all about.

The low form, clarity and simplicity was liked by the jury.

Station in Japan

A dynamic project with free-form fabric canopies well suited to a railway station situation. The project provides a series of partly covered, partly open spaces. Transforming the express-railway station into an attractive and inviting canopy-scape in this way has a high aesthetic appeal. The jury wanted to encourage the liveliness of this submission.

Apart from this, this design can be seen as a meaningful contribution to increasing the appeal of the railway as a public means of transport. The many overlapping roofing canopies and their rich variety of shapes turns the station into a kind of “adventure playground” that is both artistically appealing and people-friendly. This could provide a possible answer to the oft lamented grey monotony of many railway situations.

Visiting and using a station of this type is likely to be much more fun than we have been previously accustomed to. A station of this type is a sensible and feasible possibility not only out in a rural setting but certainly in the inner city, as well.
