Freshwater Swimming Pool in the Dead Sea

The jury liked the concept of providing clean, fresh swimming-pool water in the Dead Sea or, for example, in lagoons and lightly polluted situations. The habitable pool, formed by a semi-submerged fabric shell, floats in the surrounding higher density salt water. The elegant canopy structure is also operable.

The design is characterised by the varying use of membranes that exploit the essential features of the material in a variety of ways, for example, the translucency of the canopies in the area above water and the water tightness of the coated material for the bathing pool.

The versatility and adaptability of the entire construction to natural seasonal conditions of the environment (desert climate, salt content of the Dead Sea, flow of the river, etc.) is convincingly reflected in the planning and the presentation.

The key technological, physical and structural aspects have been investigated and solutions have been thought of, in part by means of experimentation.

The presentation is clear and easy to understand. The basic ideas of the design are readily comprehensible and are reflected in the models and drawings.

The jury commend the high standard of presentation and in particular the reference to the cupped hands holding fresh water.
